children’s health question by emily1980: How ’bout they tax Big Macs and Triple Stacks to pay for children’s health insurance?
The newspaper this morning says that the Democrats want to tax cigarettes in order to make health insurance available to all children. Isn’t obesity a growing problem among our children? Couldn’t we get children the health care they need, and at the same time reduce their risk for health problems by taxing the foods that are making them fat and unhealthy? Instead of bringing the tax on cigarettes to $ 1, why don’t we bring the tax on Happy Meals up to a $ 1? I don’t think parents would be so eager to stop at McDonald’s or Wendy’s instead of cooking if it costed more.
The statistics show that most people who smoke live in poverty. Raising the price of cigarettes is not going to deter these people from smoking. All it will do is take money from their children to continue to support their habit. Actually, I think we should tax fast-food and spend that money on stuff to actually help smokers quit – stuff other than hotlines.
All debating is welcome!!
Well, Democrats want to keep poor people from moving into their neighborhoods. They give them everything they need (welfare, foodstamps, free healthcare) as long as they stay in the projects. They want to keep these people down – they make it hard for these people to get out of the system to do better with their lives.
I am with you on “no new taxes” but I was just offering an alternative -Something to think about.

Although, thinking about it more, since more poor people are the smokers, they would actually be paying for their own children’s healthcare, instead of relying on the working man to support them and their families!
Also, the unemployed people who smoke and sit on their butts all day who are usually handed everything on a silver platter are going to be the first to complain because now they will actually be affected by taxes!!

The Effects of Smoking on Your Children

We all know that smoking has a harmful effect on our health. Yet despite the warnings we see everywhere, the smoking habits cannot be stopped. Smokers become addicted to the tobacco and cannot seem to quit. They think their health is at risk but dont realize other non-smokers around them have a greater chance for health problems.

The real purpose of this article is to teach parents the effect of smoking on their children as well as outsiders. Other subjects within this topic have also been included:

What is passive smoking?

How to quit smoking fast!

Let us learn about these subjects first so we can read on further and find out the effects of passive smoking on our children.

What is passive smoking?

Passive smoking is the term mainly used for smoke that is inhaled by others. Second-hand smoke is another term which can be used for the passive smoking.

Public places are most likely to have these environments such as pubs, restaurants etcThe effects of passive smoking can be worse. It is essential that you learn these effects now rather than later. Preventing second-hand smoke from reaching your children can help save their life earlier.

How to Quit Smoking Fast!

There are quick and easy ways to quit smoking. Please check the article on my profile to know more.

The Effects of Passive Smoking!

Research has found evidence that passive smoking can cause the same health problems or even worse as direct smoking. There are several effects of second-hand smoke. The chances for a non-smoker to catch one of these health problems are high. It only depends on how much youre exposed to second-hand smoke.

Cancer Risk!

This is one of the most common health problems we know which is caused by smoking. The risk of Lung Cancer is significantly higher for friends and family members who are constantly surrounded by smoke.

Breast Cancer

The risk of Breast Cancer increases for younger women who experience changes in their menstrual cycle due to passive smoking.

Brain Tumour

The less passive smoking your children inhale, the more of their lives you save from Brain Tumour. The risk is still the same if the mother doesnt smoke while she carries a baby in her womb.

Infections

Passive smoking gives you the risk of infections to your ear, nose and throat.

Breathing Problems

Similarly to a smoker, a non-smoker can also have heart disease because of passive smoking. The chances for asthma can also increase and worsen for those who already suffer from asthma.

What are the risks in children?

Teenagers and adults dont only suffer the effects of passive smoking but children also. In fact, as your children inhale second-hand smoke, they walk down each step ruining their life. The risks they dare take unknowingly can be fatal.

Sudden Death Syndrome
Asthma
Lung infections
Severe illnesses such as Bronchitis
Allergy
Colins diseases: difficulty to learn and delays in development
Chance of tooth decay
Ear infections

Whats the risk level?

Many believe that high levels of exposure to second-hand smoke presents a cancer risk to non-smokers. Of course, the risk level is greater for the non-smoker who chooses to spend several hours throughout the day surrounded by smoke. These areas are likely to be school, college and work based environments.

Thats a long list of health problems! Shall I take the risks?

This list has been written for you and your childrens health. It is your choice whether to take action and prevent your lives from ruin!

children’s health question by islander8181: How can Bush ask for 200 billion for war – yet say 35 billion for children’s health is irresponsible?

De Deuce: if it’s so preposterous – why do over 70% of Americans support it, along with a lot of republicans. Only ones NOT supporting it are the repubs who are afraid to go against their president.
Dee Dee: It’s poorly written so they shouldn’t support it? Yet, billions and billions have been scammed by no-bid contractors from the war appropriations – not to mention the billions we “just lost.” But I’m sure you support funding the military.

Today's children face unprecedented challenges from two very important areas. On one hand, the nutritional value of the food we eat decreases as the nutritional content of the soil is depleted through time and modern farming methods. On the other hand, the rapid increase in environmental pollution and toxic burden creates an increased need for these nutrients, the vitamins and minerals that protect, nourish and sustain a child's natural, healthy development. Eat right and support your child's de

children’s health question by time_wounds_all_heelz: Why are people for this bill about children’s health care?
Okay, I see post after post asking why Bush hates children.
So I’m wondering why people are for taxing the poor since they are usually the ones who smoke to pay for health care for children whose parents make up to 83 thousand and for “children” who are 25.
Isn’t that like robbing the poor to give to middle class?
There is already a program that handles child’s healthcare. Bush agreed to give more funds to this program, just not the amount Dem’s are asking
You are basing your question on lies and twists. Since facts are easy to find these days, do people not realize how that makes them look when they fib and then can’t back up what they say?
EDIT: Nice twist ideogene, attack the person, not the question. Like you know the first thing about me.
Now can you answer the question?
It is a fact that most smokers are POOR, and this tax would help people making 83 thousand. Is that poor in your opinion

Poor kids first,” Bush said later in explaining his decision, reflecting a concern that some of the bill’s benefits would go to families at higher incomes. “Secondly, I believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the health care system,” he added in remarks to an audience in Lancaster, Pa.
The president said he is willing to compromise with Congress “if they need a little more money in the bill to help us meet the objective of getting help for poor children.”

All the people comparing it to the war.
It is governments job to provide defense.
Please show me where it says it is government’s job to furnish health care to anyone who doesn’t want to pay for it.
I’m all for helping poor children, but this bill is B/S.
WWD: I agree with you on the child with illness. There should and must be a program to help the family. I don’t believe Bush said they shouldn’t.

Your arguement about smoking. I am an ex smoker and I know personally how hard it is to quit. I really don’t believe that many will stop smoking because of this program. I used to say I’d quit when they were more than a dollar a pack, at 3 dollars I was still smoking.
The program that exists does need more funding but not at the cost and age bracket that the dem’s are suggesting and not at the cost of ONE group of people.
