How “Community” Can Play A Staring Role In Drug Treatment And Recovery

Article by Dr. Darryl S. Inaba

The success of community based substance abuse treatment programs is based, according to Dr. Darryl Inaba, on the fact that they are uniquely able to provide care and support that is sensitive to culture, gender and place. As one of the original founders of San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc., Dr. Inaba has a long history with treatment programs that “come from the street” and so was greatly impressed with what he saw during a recent visit to Los Angeles based Homeboys Industries.

Meals Habit And Recovery Information

Article by Jack Frost

Sure, there’s such factor as meals addiction. That is the time when good meals becomes bad. Meals habit is a time period given when someone makes food the outlet for his or her problems, whatever the cause may be.

Meals habit has a simple recovery. But first, it’s a must to know what causes the stress within the person to remove his or her addiction.

Normally, the craving for food, even if the person is just not hungry, is caused by emotional problems engaged in the individual’s life. Once a dysfunctional behavior is maintained with food, there’s a threat to always be starving or over-eating.

When meals is used as a getaway software for issues, it turns into unhealthy and might result in life threatening outcomes.

Do not mistaken food habit with over-eating in food gatherings or occasions as a result of that’s completely expected. Over-consuming in parties or holidays is normal and can carry again the individual into his or her daily consuming behavior after.

Meals addiction is way past than that. It includes a certain form of craving that becomes terminal and leads the person into consuming because of emotional disturbance.

That is quite evident with people who find themselves obese. A lot of overweight individuals who had been once skinny have undergone emotional problems and made meals as their only best friend. You can think of meals dependancy as an emotional hunger and not digestive hunger.

No matter how wholesome one thing is, when it excesses, the result could be fairly nasty and unforgiving to the addicted body. Unlike smoking and consuming habit that can each be altered in ways like instead of drinking, the person exerts his consideration on train or sports.

However in food dependancy, it is fairly different because folks have to eat. An individual who’s addicted to meals cannot be extracted from eating, that’ll be brutal. Consuming is not at all bad but the way in which food is getting used up within the body is what makes food habit a no-no.

How can you spot a food addict?

1. Secretive eating. When someone in your loved ones isolates himself from everybody just to gobble up all the pieces in the fridge, this generally is a good sign. Although, this person will never mention how many occasions he eats as a result of he needed to maintain his eating disorder to himself.

2. Eating dangerous foods. Bad right here describes meals which might be raw, stale, undercooked, overcooked or even half frozen.

Meals dependancy isn’t just meant for those who are fat but also to those who seems regular and underweight. This kind of addiction is related to other food eating disorders like bulimia wherein someone indulges in food and then outcomes to induced vomiting or laxative use to remove excess food that have been taken.

The moment you have spotted somebody who is into food dependancy, particularly in your family or perhaps a buddy, take a moment to sit down down and know the cause of the problem.

Meals addicts are in dire need of psychological and medical help so as to overcome the disorder. If someone in your family has exhibited food habit, it’s a must to make him or her see a psychologist or seek the advice of a council.

It is usually necessary to let the particular person visit a physician with a purpose to diagnose any illness that’s already occurring inside the body. For meals habit to see restoration, there is a have to identify the present problems which might be inflicting the habit and deal with it.

addiction and recovery question by Faith: Do you think Recovery High Schools are a great idea?
BEVERLY, Massachusetts (CNN) — It was Halloween night when 12-year-old Lucy Gross picked up her first marijuana cigarette, starting a spiral from which she is still struggling to recover. By the time she was 15, the Gloucester, Massachusetts, teen was drinking, using cocaine and taking a variety of other pills, including Vicodin and Oxycontin. Her parents were worried. Even she knew she needed help.

By high school, she had a diagnosis of depression and was suffering from anxiety. Lucy spent a month in treatment at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, then six more months at a residential facility in Maine for troubled teens. Her parents’ biggest worry was what would happen when Lucy had to go back to her old school.

“For kids who are susceptible to go back into that environment and to stay clean and sober, it’s just got to be incredibly difficult,” said Lucy’s mother, Abbie Lundberg. “I don’t know how they do it.”

Luckily, Lucy didn’t have to. Northshore Recovery High School opened its doors three years ago in Beverly, Massachusetts, a 20-minute ride from Gloucester. The school is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the local school districts. The goal: provide high school students a safe, drug-free environment where they can finish their education.

Recovery high, the real gift that it gives to the kids is the soft landing when they come out of rehab or a longer-term facility like Lucy was in,” said Tony Gross, Lucy’s father. “It just allows them to reintegrate at their own pace, gently.”

It’s a traditional curriculum with a twist: a 12-step model program designed to prevent relapse. There are group sessions every day so kids can talk about any issues, problems or progress they’re making. When they graduate, students receive a state-certified diploma
Michaela Gile teaches English at Northshore. “It’s incredibly difficult in one sense and it’s also incredibly rewarding, because you deal with students whose emotions are very raw. There are certain things some kids can’t do on a given day because it’s too hard. Life gets too hard sometimes to, say, sit down and write an essay. So you have to make allowances for that.”

While Northshore is relatively new, recovery high schools are not. The first one, Sobriety High, opened its doors in 1987 in Edina, Minnesota, outside Minneapolis. Judy Hanson was there almost from the beginning. As a licensed alcohol and drug counselor at treatment centers in the area, she acted as an adviser to Sobriety High’s founder.

“I would be so tired of seeing students that I transitioned from the treatment center to their former high school fail within the first month. You tell these kids to go back to high school and tell them to not see their old using friends and build a new network of friends, and it’s so hard.”

I don’t base my success on relapse,” Northside’s Lipinski said. “I base my success on these children willing to come back and make a go of it again. I mean, you don’t find many dropouts from a high school coming back and asking for a second chance.”Hanson agrees. “Our graduation rates are usually above 90 percent,” she said, “Higher than most public schools.”

addiction and recovery question by drew67chevy: Should I be taking benzodiazepines with Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin is a dopamine re uptake inhibitor and helps with my amphetamine addiction recovery. But I get stressed at work sometimes but I dont know if Its always working. Are these meds countering each other? Im on Valium now any other benzos better for this combo. Or anything else. Please , any help . Thanks!

addiction and recovery best answer:

Answer by Tara J
For most people, Wellbutrin acts like a stimulant. It does not treat anxiety and may cause or worsen anxiety, so I’m guessing this is why you’re on Valium. Valium however is sedative and will make you drowsy. The combination probably is not the best. Your doctor may advise you to take Wellbutrin in the morning and Valium later in the day. Also, remember that all benzodiazepines are only meant for short-term daily use (6 to 8 weeks) or long term occasional use (taken on an “as needed” basis). If you need a benzodiazepine, most people find Xanax to be the least sedative, sometimes exhibiting antidepressant effects. Xanax has a very short half-life, making it very addictive. With your abuse history, I don’t think this would be good for you though. Effexor XR and Paxil and a few other antidepressants treat depression and anxiety and your doctor may find these to be a better fit for you. I will warn you that they do cause weight gain and sexual side effects. Hope this gives you some options to speak to your doctor about. Best wishes <3

Sexual Addiction and the Road to Sexual Sobriety

Article by Amber Hernandez

Sex addiction is a behavioral condition wherein a person is too attached to sexual activities be it pornography addiction, compulsive masturbation, prostitution, voyeurism and exhibitionism, compulsive sexual episodes, having chronic affairs, or unsafe sexual practices. Sex addicts no longer have the proper context of what is right and what is wrong. What is convenient and sexually fulfilling become the basis of acts regardless of norms. Therefore, sex addicts no longer have the power to choose and have the freedom to stop.

The result becomes too obvious. Relationship problems, losing a job, marital problems and even lawful arrests soon follow. The progressive behavioral change can result to damaging and even permanent problems. But these consequences also become the trigger for change. An addict often realizes he needs to change and accepts his condition that he allows himself to change in.

This is where the road to sexual sobriety begins. For other types of addiction like substance abuse, sobriety is the period where the recovering person is away from these substances. For those who are recovering from sex addiction, it is quite different. Sexual sobriety is rarely considered as abstinence from sex, although there may be times where the recovering person has to undergo sexual abstinence for a certain period of time to address particular issues and place sex in the right perspective.

Sexual sobriety is often a contract between the person and the 12-step recovery support program or therapist. This contract or “sex plans” clearly defines the behavior of the person and what activities he needs to avoid or abstain from in order to define sobriety. In some contracts, the boundaries are quite clear; for example, “no sexual relationship outside marital commitment.” Although the contract can be restrictive and sometimes embarrassing, these steps have to be done in order to help the recovering person. This contract may evolve as the person gets clearer understanding of the situation and becomes more deliberate in following what is explicitly written. Sexual sobriety in principle gives the person guidelines to follow in order to help him become normal again.

Sexual sobriety, however, doesn’t guarantee full recovery. It only brings you one step closer to recovery. To get better chances, the support of the family and friends may be required. Helping the recovering person to be reminded of the things he has to avoid and things he has to do is will surely be a huge help.

Gambling Treatment And Recovery Programs for Compulsive Gamblers

Article by howard keith

Gambling treatment and recovery programs are now a click away. With the ever expanding internet you can almost find anything you are looking for through the search engines.

There are a number of websites that have popped up over the past few years that deal directly with gambling addiction. These site have created various programs that may help the compulsive gambler beat there addiction. There are even websites that are available to help family and friends of the compulsive gambler.

There are times where compulsive gamblers looking for help finally find a website that peaks there interest. At this point they are hopeful but pessimistic that this is really going to help them.

Compulsive Gamblers are unique individuals who have lost trust in people and humanity. This happens as they fall deep into the grips of their addiction. As they begin to realize what they have done they continue their distrust, may become arrogant and or misunderstand simple concepts. As they begin to surf the web they continue their distrust and sometimes even take it out on the people that are trying to help them. The following is a few examples of emails from compulsive gamblers sent to stop gambling websites:

Hello can you email me back so I know if this is an automated response or a real live person?

I received confirmation for the chat room. The fees states 19.95 per year. Is there going to be a monthly recurring fee?

I paid $ 24.95 for your manual. I have not received the book yet. You are supposed to email it to me. This email came in ten minutes after the person ordered it. They then followed up ten minutes later with, are you a real company or did you rip me off. Then they send a third email. It’s been a half hour where the ______ is my manual. The owner of the site emailed the manual forty five minutes after the order was received. The person wrote and explained that it clearly states the manual will be mailed with in one hour after you place your order. The website Help To Stop Gambling Addiction understood what was going on and took the time to help the person realize that they were not out to rip them off but to help them. The compulsive gambler apologized for their abusive behavior and is now in recovery thanks to the website.

Why are you charging a fee to help people that have an addiction?

How could you charge $ 19.95 per year for your chat room? The website emailed back the compulsive gambler and asked them how much did you lose last week gambling? The gambler replied $ 750.00. The website emails the person and asks a simple question. How could you throw away $ 750.00 last week but are not willing to invest $ 19.95 in yourself that will give you a peace of mind and someone to listen to you seven days a week for a year? Then the website asked what did you get for the $ 750.00 you lost last week? I am pleased to say this person is now in recovery.

When dealing with an individual with a gambling addiction, you have to reach out into their world and draw them into a healthier way of living. I believe compulsive gamblers have a greater chance of treatment and recovery if they can relate to the individuals who are helping them.
