Five Kinds of Food Not Beneficial to Children’s Health

In order to make their children grow up healthily, parents always provide a variety of nutritious food to them. However, although these nutritious foods are really helpful for children’s physiological and mental development, while some of them contain various kinds of harmful substances, which are not beneficial on children’s health and may even cause some diseases.

Firstly, food containing saccharin, essence and pigment, such as jelly, bubble gum, instant noodles, sweet beverages, etc. This kind of food contains very few nutrients but a lot of saccharin, sweetener, colorant, essence, etc. All of these substances have certain toxicity. If children often eat these foods, it is not conducive to their health. In addition, fruits such as orange and pineapple are the favorites for many children. However, although these fruits are very nutritious, they always contain a lot of natural erythrophyll. If children take in too much erythrophyll, it may easily lead to “erythrophyll skin disease”. As a result, children should not eat too much orange and pineapple.

Secondly, food which can excite nerves or contain hormone, such as cola drinks and chocolate. If children eat too much of this kind of food, it will produce stimulation on the central nervous system, make children anxious and restless, speed up their heartbeat, and lead to insomnia. What’s more, ginseng and royal jelly have the effect of promoting the secretion of hormone. Therefore, if children always eat them, it may lead to precocious puberty, and affect the normal growth and development of the body.

Thirdly, food containing toxic substances or preservatives and additives, such as salted fish, popcorn, canned goods, etc. Salted fish contains a lot of dimethyl nitrate. After this substance enters the human body, it will change into a strong carcinogen–dimethyl nitrosamine, which may lead to cancer on children. Smoked food also contains a large number of carcinogenic substances. Popcorn contains a high content of lead. After it enters human body, it will damage the function of human nervous, digestive, and hematopoietic system. In addition, there are always a lot of pesticides on the fruits and vegetables, which you should also pay great attention to.

Fourthly, high-fat food, such as egg, sunflower seeds, pork liver, etc. These foods do have high nutritional value, but egg and pork liver contain a high content of cholesterol, and they are not easy to be digested by the body. If children eat too much of these foods, it will significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Sunflower seeds contain plenty of unsaturated fatty acids. If children eat too much sunflower seeds, it will consume a large number of choline in the body, thus affecting the detoxification effect of liver cells.

Fifthly, food rich in organic acids, such as spinach, pear, strong tea, and so on. This kind of food contains a large number of organic acids like phytic acid, oxalic acid, tannic acid, etc. These organic acids will closely connect with the iron, zinc and calcium in the body, and make them unable to be absorbed by the body. Childhood Obesity and Health Risks

Today, public awareness is increasingly focusing on childhood obesity and the health risks associated with such a devastating issue. It is certainly no secret that obesity in children has quickly grown into a serious problem, and it is now referred to as a nationwide epidemic. Whats more, todays obese children are tomorrows unhealthy adults: the next generation faces considerable problems with hypertension, Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other severe health conditions stemming from childhood obesity. Thus, the increased awareness and focus on childhood obesity is a good beginning, and there is much to do when it comes to battling childhood obesity.

Overweight children frequently grow up and become adults with significant weight issues. Children suffering from obesity have already developed negative eating habits and poor exercise habits which are carried through into their adulthoods. This makes such children more susceptible to a whole host of health risks. One quarter of all American children are struggling with being overweight and are also struggling with issues related to childhood obesity. Many children that develop obesity also develop Diabetes of the type II variety. Formerly an issue that was far more prominent in older people, children are also now developing this form of diabetes, too. Type II Diabetes is also identified as non insulin dependent Diabetes.

Childhood obesity can increase the chances that a child will develop issues with asthma, and obesity can further complicate existing asthmatic issues. Experts are now finding that there may be a link between the onset of asthma and obesity. Further, since extra weight strains the body physically, it can also strain the already weakened respiratory system of the child suffering from asthma and asthmatic attacks.

Childhood obesity is also an issue that can have deeply negative effects on a child psychologically. While being overweight may cause issues with the childs self esteem, confidence, and self perception, the very same issues with weight can later lead to issues with mood disorders and depression, too. Obese children have far more difficulty participating in normal, healthy childhood activities including sports and recreational pursuits. Obesity can cause children to miss out on many of the positive things children are meant to enjoy with relative ease. These same children will develop into teenagers with difficulties socializing and dating, as well.

Children that are obese also face problems when they become obese adults. Poor eating and exercise habits follow the child throughout his or her life and the child later becomes an adult that continues to struggle with weight issues. The issue can even be passed onto children and grandchildren thereby making the issue with weight control one that become generational. As an overweight adult, the individual then faces an onslaught of additional health related concerns including the development of heart disease, and the potential risk of having a stroke, as well as gastrointestinal issues. Obese adults also face issues with the development and/or exacerbation of Arthritis. Finally, obese adults are more prone to developing high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and certain types of cancers, fatty liver disease, and gallbladder disease, too.

Being overweight is something that is being more and more common in children and something that needs to be tackled as soon as possible. Apart from the physiological harm it can cause from bullying and low self-esteem, there are serious health risks to being overweight as a child.

It is estimated that there are over 22 million children throughout the world who are obese. School aged children in America and Western Europe is the groups that have seen an annual increase since 1970. However, it has been shown that over 75% of overweight and obese children are from low and middle income countries.

In the UK, a survey from 1995 2001 showed a significant increase of obesity in children but a more recent survey (2007) showed that there was no significant increase in children aged 2 15 years old. In the 1995 2001 survey, it showed that the rise in obesity levels in boys was 17%, whilst girls showed an increase of 12 16%.

It is believed that this stabilising period is because of recent health promotions in the UK. Famous chefs, such as Jamie Oliver (also known as the Naked Chef), has campaigned to improve the meals that children eat during school hours. This includes swapping burgers for salads and campaigning for healthier snacks in vending machines.

Obesity in children has been thought to be caused by different reasons. Low levels of energy input and expenditure is one reason. Children do not seem to be as active as previous generations were. Todays children tend to sit in front of the computer for hours playing games online, or sit in front of the TV watching movies and other programs, when they could be playing outside and getting rid of all that pent up energy that they have hidden deep within.

Diet plays a big part in obesity in children. Fatty foods, such as burgers, chips and chocolate will build up the fat levels stored in their bodies. Change their diets add in plenty of healthy foods like fruit, vegetables and salads. This is not to say that they shouldnt have these other foods, but use them as treats not every day meals.

Sleep deprivation can also add to obesity in children. Studies have shown that children going to bed at later times could contribute to obesity in children. Those who do sleep too little have lower levels of leptin and higher levels of ghrelin which build up fatty cells.

Obesity in children is a serious problem. It can seriously damage a childs self-esteem but can cause heart, liver and kidney problems in later life. It is recommended that you should tackle the problem as early as possible to avoid this trouble.
